Demi Moore had a one-word reaction to losing the Best Actress award at the 2025 Oscars, and according to a lip reader, it wasn’t exactly enthusiastic.

The Substance star, 62, was visibly tense when Mikey Madison was announced as the winner for her performance in Anora, a moment that didn’t go unnoticed by fans.

“Demi says ‘nice,’ but she isn’t smiling when she says it,” lip reader Nicola Hickling told the Daily Mail. “Her body is almost nodding, like she had to force herself to say it.”

A video circulating on X (formerly Twitter) appeared to show Moore clenching her jaw as the 25-year-old actress made her way to the stage.

Madison, still in shock, delivered an emotional acceptance speech while holding her Oscar. “This is very surreal. I grew up in Los Angeles, but Hollywood always felt so far away from me, so to be here, standing in this room today, is really incredible,” she said.

Moore and Madison were both nominated in the fiercely competitive Best Actress category, alongside Fernanda Torres (I’m Still Here), Karla Sofía Gascón (Emilia Pérez), and Cynthia Erivo (Wicked).

Meanwhile, Anora, which follows the story of a sex worker who marries the son of a Russian oligarch, dominated the night – winning Best Picture over The Brutalist, Wicked, Conclave, A Complete Unknown, Dune: Part Two, Emilia Pérez, I’m Still Here, Nickel Boys, and The Substance.

Demi Moore has yet to publicly comment on the loss, but her reaction has already sparked plenty of speculation online. Was it just a moment of disappointment, or was she throwing subtle shade?
