Disorder in Tripura over demands for Puja and fair contributions, internet services suspended

The northeastern Indian state of Tripura has witnessed alarming communal clashes in its Unakoti district following disputes over festival and local fair donations. The violence reportedly stemmed from a disagreement over contributions requested by a man named Mosabbir Ali, escalating rapidly into widespread unrest that left at least five to six people injured. Several homes and shops were set ablaze, prompting authorities to take strict measures, including the suspension of mobile internet services, to restore order.

According to NDTV, the flashpoint occurred in Kumarghat, within the Fatikroy police station area, where tensions between two communities intensified over the collection of donations for a local fair. Eyewitnesses reported that what began as a verbal disagreement quickly escalated into physical confrontations, leading to arson and property damage. In response, the Tripura government imposed immediate restrictions and deployed a substantial number of security personnel to contain the unrest. Mobile internet services were suspended as a precautionary measure for 48 hours.

Police sources stated that the dispute over donations turned into communal hostilities, culminating in the destruction of multiple structures and targeted attacks on houses. At least eight individuals have been arrested in connection with the violence. Central security forces, including the Tripura State Rifles (TSR) and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), conducted flag marches and patrols to maintain public order. Drone surveillance was also employed to monitor the situation.

Local reports indicate that the initial altercation began when fair committee members demanded a donation from Mosabbir Ali for an upcoming community event near the Vaibhav Thali area of Kanchanbari Main Road. Following his refusal, a series of retaliatory attacks ensued, including arson at timber shops, the destruction of a local shrine, and road blockages, which damaged several vehicles and spread fear among residents.

Police Superintendent Avinash Rai told India Today NE: “Some youths set fire to a few houses. Our prompt deployment of forces helped us regain control. Section 163 has been enforced, and flag marches are ongoing. The situation is now calm and fully under control.”

Authorities have appealed to the public to refrain from sharing provocative content on social media. Security patrols will continue in the district ahead of the traditional Vaibhav Mela, scheduled from 24 to 26 January.
