“DMCH Clash Inquiry Panel Begins Urgent Investigation”

A six-member investigation committee has been formed to probe the circumstances surrounding the violent confrontation between doctors and students at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) and the University of Dhaka, hospital authorities confirmed on Wednesday night.

The decision was taken during an emergency high-level meeting held at approximately 7:45 pm, following unrest earlier in the day in the hospital’s emergency department. The announcement was made by DMCH Director Brigadier General Dr Md Asaduzzaman, who stated that the committee has been tasked with identifying those responsible for the incident and submitting its findings within a strictly limited timeframe.

Composition of the Inquiry Committee

Category Details
Total members 6
Chairperson Dean, Faculty of Medicine, University of Dhaka
Lead institution University of Dhaka Medical Faculty
Reporting deadline Saturday, 11 April (morning)
Mandate Investigation of DMCH–DU clash and identification of accountability

According to the hospital director, the committee will conduct a rapid but comprehensive review of the sequence of events that culminated in the confrontation between medical staff and university students. He emphasised that the formation of the panel is aimed at ensuring transparency, restoring order, and addressing rising tensions within the hospital environment.

Speaking to reporters, Brig Gen Dr Md Asaduzzaman confirmed that the inquiry body has been instructed to submit its report by Saturday morning without delay. He added that administrative measures would be taken promptly based on the findings of the investigation.

Background to the Incident

The clash originated on Wednesday afternoon in the emergency unit of DMCH when a student from the Botany Department (2023–24 academic session) at the University of Dhaka, identified as Sanim, was admitted with severe abdominal pain suspected to be acute appendicitis.

Following clinical assessment, attending physicians prescribed three injectable medicines considered essential for urgent treatment. However, complications arose when the prescribed drugs were found to be unavailable in the hospital pharmacy, compelling attendants to search for them externally.

Despite repeated efforts, the medicines could not be sourced from nearby pharmacies, where shortages were also reported. This situation reportedly led to mounting frustration and miscommunication between the patient’s companions and on-duty medical staff, which subsequently escalated into a physical altercation inside the emergency department.

Police were later deployed to the scene and managed to bring the situation under control after tensions intensified within the hospital premises.

Emergency Services Partially Resumed

Following the late-night administrative meeting, hospital authorities confirmed that emergency services have resumed on a limited basis. However, officials acknowledged that the environment remains tense, with healthcare staff operating under considerable pressure.

At the same time, the Interne Doctors’ Association of DMCH issued a warning that a complete work stoppage could be enforced if there is no visible progress in the investigation within 24 hours. The organisation stressed that ensuring the safety and professional dignity of doctors is essential alongside maintaining uninterrupted patient care.

Wider Institutional Concerns

The incident has once again drawn attention to longstanding structural challenges within Bangladesh’s public healthcare system, particularly in high-pressure facilities such as DMCH. Issues highlighted include irregular availability of essential medicines, gaps in communication between medical staff and patient attendants, and the strain placed on emergency departments due to overwhelming patient loads.

Health experts note that such factors often converge in emergency settings, where delays or misunderstandings can rapidly escalate into conflict.

Authorities are now expected to examine not only the specific incident but also broader systemic weaknesses in emergency drug procurement, hospital pharmacy coordination, and patient management protocols.

Outlook

The findings of the newly formed committee are anticipated to play a decisive role in establishing accountability and recommending reforms. Officials hope the inquiry will help restore confidence among both medical professionals and the public, while also reducing the risk of similar incidents occurring in the future within critical care environments.
