The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has taken administrative action following an incident involving a clothing showroom in the Moghbazar area of the capital, alongside the formation of an official inquiry committee to investigate the matter thoroughly. As part of the measures, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Hatirjheel Police Station, Gholam Mortuza, has been withdrawn from his post and attached to the DMP headquarters.
The development was confirmed late on Wednesday night by Deputy Commissioner (Media and Public Relations) Muhammad Talebur Rahman, who outlined the initial sequence of events that led to the action. According to his statement, an incident occurred on 20 March at a shop within the Boshil Shopping Centre in Moghbazar, where a promotional offer on traditional Punjabi attire reportedly triggered a confrontation between the market committee and the concerned showroom.
The situation escalated into an unwanted and tense atmosphere within the marketplace, prompting concerns over law and order, as well as questions regarding the role, if any, of law enforcement personnel in the incident. In response, the DMP has formed a dedicated investigation committee tasked with examining all aspects of the case, including whether any police officers were directly or indirectly involved.
In addition to the removal of the OC from his station duties, a Sub-Inspector (ASI) has also been administratively attached to the Rajarbagh Police Lines. These actions are understood to be precautionary measures taken pending the outcome of the ongoing investigation.
| Category | Action | Individual/Unit | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Investigation | Committee formed to probe incident | DMP | Ongoing |
| Officer Action | OC withdrawn from duties | Gholam Mortuza | Attached to HQ |
| Police Action | ASI transferred | Unnamed ASI | Attached to Rajarbagh Police Lines |
| Oversight | Review of police involvement | DMP committee | Under review |
Officials have stated that the investigation will be conducted impartially, with a focus on establishing accountability and ensuring that any irregularities are addressed in accordance with the law. The findings of the committee will determine any further disciplinary or legal measures to be taken.
The incident has drawn attention to broader concerns regarding marketplace management, crowd control, and the role of law enforcement in commercial disputes. Situations arising from promotional events or commercial disagreements can sometimes escalate quickly, particularly in densely populated urban markets such as Moghbazar, where large numbers of customers gather.
Authorities have emphasised that maintaining public order and ensuring that commercial activities are conducted within a lawful framework are key priorities. The DMP’s swift administrative response, including the withdrawal of a senior officer, reflects the seriousness with which such incidents are treated within the police hierarchy.
Observers note that internal inquiries such as this are an important mechanism for maintaining transparency and accountability within law enforcement agencies. By reviewing the actions of officers and the circumstances surrounding such incidents, authorities aim to uphold public trust and reinforce professional standards within the police force.
As the investigation proceeds, further updates are expected from the DMP regarding the findings and any subsequent actions. For now, the focus remains on determining the facts surrounding the Moghbazar incident and ensuring that appropriate measures are taken based on the committee’s recommendations.
