In anticipation of Shaheed Minar on International Mother Language Day and National Martyrs’ Day, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has issued detailed instructions regarding the routes visitors should use to access the central monument in Dhaka. The measures are part of a comprehensive security plan to ensure the safety of attendees during the commemorations.
On Friday, 20 February, DMP Commissioner Sheikh Md. Sajjat Ali addressed a press conference at the Shaheed Minar premises, outlining the traffic and security arrangements. He urged citizens to use only specific roads to approach the monument, stating:
“Visitors paying tribute at the Shaheed Minar are requested to enter via Palashi Mor, Jagannath Hall Crossing, or Shaheed Minar Road. Other routes should not be used. After paying respects, visitors should exit through Doyel Chattar or Chankhanpul.”
The Commissioner emphasised that no sharp objects, flammable items, or hazardous materials should be brought to the site.
He also reassured the public that the security arrangements have been designed to allow safe participation for all. “There is no cause for concern regarding safety during the observances of 21 February. Following the tributes by the President, Prime Minister, high-ranking state officials, and foreign diplomats, the central Shaheed Minar will be opened to the general public from approximately 12:40 a.m. onwards,” he added.
The DMP has put in place a multi-layered security protocol, mobilising a significant number of personnel to manage the crowds and maintain law and order.
