The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has issued a stern directive to remove all unauthorised structures and business extensions encroaching on footpaths and roads across the capital. The announcement, made on Monday, 23 March 2026, came through a public notice from the DMP headquarters, signalling intensified action against street-level obstructions.
The notice specifies that all encroachments must be cleared before 1 April 2026. Failure to comply will prompt immediate legal action through mobile courts, led by Special Metropolitan Magistrates and Executive Magistrates. Penalties may include imprisonment, fines, and confiscation of goods.
DMP has highlighted that various establishments—including restaurants, motor vehicle repair workshops, welding shops, garment and furniture stores—have extended their operations beyond their designated premises, occupying sections of footpaths and roads. This unauthorised use has created serious obstacles for pedestrians, forcing many to walk on busy streets and increasing the risk of traffic accidents.
Specific concerns include:

In the notice, DMP urged all business owners to immediately remove goods and equipment from footpaths and roads. Officials emphasised that this move serves the public interest, ensuring safe and unhindered passage for pedestrians while restoring lawful urban order.
The police have made it clear that post-deadline action will include:
DMP warned that these measures are non-negotiable and are necessary to uphold law and public safety in Dhaka.
