The Government of Bangladesh has removed Mohammad Ejaz from his position as Administrator of the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC). He has been replaced by Suraiya Akter Jahan, Additional Secretary of the Local Government Division, who will assume the role alongside her existing responsibilities.
The decision was formalised on Monday, 9 February, through a government notification signed by Mahbuba Airin, Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives. The notification stipulates that Suraiya Akter Jahan will exercise the powers and privileges of the DNCC Mayor in addition to her current position. However, she will receive only the standard “duty allowance” in accordance with regulations, without the full mayoral benefits.
Mohammad Ejaz had been appointed DNCC Administrator on 12 February last year, while also serving as Chairman of the River and Delta Research Centre. His tenure, however, was abruptly cut short following legal proceedings initiated by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). Recently, the court imposed a travel ban on him at the request of the ACC, citing ongoing investigations into allegations of misconduct. A few days after the court order, the government took the decision to relieve him of his administrative duties.
City administration experts have noted that the role of a DNCC Administrator is pivotal, encompassing oversight of civic services, urban planning, and budgetary management. The administrator acts as the primary authority in the absence of an elected mayor, ensuring continuity in governance, public services, and development projects.
Table: Recent Changes in DNCC Administration
| Name | Position Held | Term | Reason for Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mohammad Ejaz | DNCC Administrator | 12 Feb 2025 – 9 Feb 2026 | Court-imposed travel ban following ACC request |
| Suraiya Akter Jahan | Additional Secretary / DNCC Administrator | 9 Feb 2026 – Present | Appointed as acting administrator |
According to government sources, Suraiya Akter Jahan’s appointment is intended to maintain administrative continuity in the city while the ACC investigation into Ejaz proceeds. Her extensive experience in local government and urban development is expected to facilitate ongoing civic projects, including waste management, traffic control, and urban infrastructure upgrades.
Officials have also indicated that the government is reviewing city administration protocols to prevent potential disruptions during periods of transition. The replacement of Ejaz highlights the increasing scrutiny of public officials and underscores the administration’s commitment to transparency and accountability in local governance.
In the interim, Suraiya Akter Jahan is tasked with ensuring that the DNCC continues to operate effectively, while aligning development initiatives with national urban planning goals and maintaining essential public services for the residents of Dhaka North.
