Published: 17 Jan 2026, 05:40 am

In a chilling discovery that has sent shockwaves through the local community, the decomposed remains of a mother and her teenage daughter were recovered from the residence of a private tutor in Keraniganj, Dhaka. The victims had been missing for approximately 20 days before their bodies were discovered on the night of Thursday, 16 January 2026.

Discovery of the Crime Scene

The grim find occurred in a second-floor flat of a five-storey building in the Muktir Bagh area of Kalindi Union. Residents alerted the authorities after an unbearable stench began emanating from the apartment. Upon arrival, officers from the Keraniganj Model Police Station were forced to break down the door to gain entry.

Inside, they discovered a scene of absolute horror. The body of Rokeya Rahman (32) was found concealed beneath a bed, while the remains of her daughter, Fatema (14), were hidden atop a bathroom sunshade. Both bodies were in an advanced state of decomposition.

Arrests and Legal Proceedings

Following the recovery of the bodies, police moved swiftly to apprehend those suspected of involvement. Two primary suspects have been formally arrested:

Meem Begum (24): Fatema’s private tutor and the tenant of the flat.

Nurjahan Begum alias Nusrat (30): Meem's elder sister.

Sub-Inspector (SI) Md Rony Chowdhury confirmed that a total of four individuals were initially taken into custody for interrogation. The remains have since been transported to the Sir Salimullah Medical College Mitford Hospital mortuary for post-mortem examinations to determine the exact cause of death.

Allegations of Negligence

The victims were the wife and daughter of Md Shahin Mia, a legal assistant. Mr Mia had filed a General Diary (GD) with the Keraniganj Model Police Station shortly after his family vanished on 25 December 2025.

However, grieving relatives have expressed profound dissatisfaction with the initial police response. They allege that law enforcement failed to provide adequate cooperation or conduct a rigorous search following the disappearance, arguing that a more proactive investigation might have prevented this tragic outcome.

As the investigation continues, local residents have held vigils, demanding exemplary punishment for the perpetrators of such a "heinous and cold-blooded" crime. The motive behind the killings remains under investigation.
