Subrata Chowdhury, Executive President of Gano Forum and Senior Advocate, has strongly criticised Nobel Laureate Dr Muhammad Yunus, accusing him of endangering Bangladesh’s state institutions and governance framework.
In a recent statement, Chowdhury remarked:
“Dr Muhammad Yunus is dragging the entire state mechanism into a crisis. Each day, new events are unfolding in Bangladesh, and the government remains helpless and silent. Now, the judiciary itself is under pressure.”
Chowdhury accused Dr Yunus of initiating activities that go against constitutional directives and long-standing legal norms:
“You have started operations here in violation of constitutional guidelines and traditional legal procedures. By pushing for permanent benches across various regions under the guise of judicial decentralisation, you are undermining the unitary system of governance.”
He further alleged:
“Dr Yunus and Asif Nazrul together are creating confusion and instability in the country. Eighteen crore people will not forgive you.”
Chowdhury raised serious concerns about the frequent issuance of ordinances:
“You are issuing ordinance after ordinance — but what value do these ordinances hold? If future elected governments reject them, what will be your position? The public will then demand justice.”
Key Allegations
Undermining judicial integrity
Bypassing constitutional norms
Promoting permanent regional benches
Undue influence on the judiciary
Issuing baseless ordinances
Political manipulation of appointments
He warned that these actions would lead to a lack of accountability and urged those responsible to be prepared to answer to the nation for their misconduct:
“You will have to answer to the people for the misdeeds committed through these ordinances.”
On the matter of judicial appointments, Subrata Chowdhury stated:
“The lawyer community believes the recent actions taken for appointing judges contradict the constitution. We are observing a repetition of past irregularities in judicial appointments, which were once committed by Sheikh Hasina’s government.”
He accused the current administration of starting a new form of malpractice, likening it to a flawed numerical game:
“You have now begun an ‘18 and 12’ game in judicial appointments — we will never accept this.”
Chowdhury concluded his statement with a stern appeal:
“We urge you to refrain from this destructive path immediately.”
