Drone Attack in South Kordofan, Sudan Kills 79, Including 43 Children

At least 79 people, including 43 children, have been killed in a drone attack by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Sudan’s South Kordofan region. Another 38 people were injured. The Sudanese authorities confirmed the incident on Friday, 5 December, according to Anadolu.

The South Kordofan state government said in a statement that the attack took place on Thursday in the town of Kalogi, Western Sudan. Among the dead were four women. Four missiles were reportedly fired from an RSF drone, hitting a kindergarten, a hospital, and densely populated areas. The state government described the attack as a “heinous crime” carried out by the RSF-backed Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North.

Initially, eight people, including six children and a teacher, were reported dead. Later, the death toll rose to 79. The state government has called on the international community and human rights organisations to take firm action to halt such violence, declare the RSF a terrorist organisation, and hold their allies accountable for these “inhumane crimes.”

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) strongly condemned the attack, calling it a grave violation of children’s rights. Over ten of the deceased children were aged between five and seven years.

The conflict, which began in April 2023 between the Sudanese army and the RSF, has already taken a severe toll. According to the World Health Organization, at least 40,000 people have been killed, and around 12 million displaced.
