Dual Fatality in Maheshkhali: Mother and Son Found Dead

The tranquil coastal community of Nayapara, within the Kutubjom Union of Maheshkhali, has been left reeling following the discovery of the bodies of a young mother and her four-year-old son. On Sunday afternoon, local authorities recovered the remains of 26-year-old Ismat Ara and her infant child, Abrar, from their modest residence on the offshore island.

Chilling Discovery at the Scene

The grim scene was uncovered by neighbours and family members, who promptly alerted the police. Upon arrival, officers from Maheshkhali Police Station noted significant trauma to the mother’s person; specifically, Ismat Ara exhibited severe injuries to both her head and neck. Adding to the forensic complexity of the scene, investigators recovered a blood-stained brick nearby, which is currently being treated as a key piece of evidence.

While the child, Abrar, showed no obvious external wounds comparable to his mother’s, preliminary suspicions suggest he may have been strangled. The bodies were transported on Sunday evening to the Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital morgue for comprehensive post-mortem examinations.

A History of Mental Instability

The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Maheshkhali Police Station, Mujibur Rahman, provided context regarding Ismat’s troubled history. Interviews with local representatives and the victim’s father revealed a narrative of long-term mental health struggles. Ismat’s psychological state reportedly deteriorated significantly after her husband, Ansar Hossain, abandoned the family several years ago, forcing her to relocate to a small shack adjacent to her father’s property.

According to family testimony, Ismat had a history of self-harm. Relatives recounted episodes where she would strike her head against walls and, in one harrowing instance, had previously attempted to set herself on fire.

Investigative Theories

While the police are investigating the possibility of a murder-suicide—hypothesising that Ismat may have killed her son before taking her own life with the brick—they have stopped short of a definitive conclusion. Local Union Parishad member, Zainal Abedin, noted that the community remains suspicious. The sheer violence of the injuries on the mother has led some to question whether a third party could be involved, transforming the case from a tragedy of mental health into a criminal homicide investigation.

OC Mujibur Rahman emphasised that “all avenues are being explored.” The forensic report, expected later this week, will be the deciding factor in determining whether the injuries were self-inflicted or indicative of a struggle with an assailant.
