Eastern Bank Strengthens Thalassaemia Care

Eastern Bank PLC has announced a renewed commitment to advancing thalassaemia treatment infrastructure in Bangladesh through a strategic partnership with Bangladesh Thalassaemia Foundation. The collaboration, undertaken as part of the bank’s corporate social responsibility programme, seeks to expand access to safe and efficient blood storage and transfusion services for low income and underserved patients.

The agreement was formally signed at the bank’s headquarters in Dhaka, where a donation cheque was handed over by Ziaul Karim, Head of Communications and External Affairs at Eastern Bank, to Professor Dr Syeda Masuma Rahman, Vice President of the Foundation. Senior representatives from both institutions attended the ceremony, underscoring the institutional significance of the initiative.

Strengthening Clinical Infrastructure

Under the partnership, Eastern Bank will finance the procurement and installation of specialised medical equipment at the Foundation’s treatment centre. The primary objective is to enhance the precision, safety and operational efficiency of blood component separation, preservation and transfusion processes.

Patients with transfusion dependent thalassaemia typically require blood transfusions every two to four weeks throughout their lives. Without modern processing facilities, they face heightened risks of iron overload, transfusion reactions and blood borne infections. Improved laboratory capacity and cold chain management are therefore central to mitigating preventable complications.

The principal areas of support are outlined below:

Area of Support Equipment Supplied Expected Outcome
Blood component separation Refrigerated centrifuge Accurate separation of red cells, plasma and platelets
Platelet preservation Platelet storage unit with agitator Maintained platelet viability and safer transfusion
Plasma storage Plasma freezer Long term stable preservation
Whole blood storage Blood bank refrigerator Reduced wastage and safer inventory management

By installing modern laboratory and storage systems, the initiative is expected to improve treatment outcomes, extend life expectancy and enhance overall quality of life for patients.

A National Health Challenge

Thalassaemia is a serious inherited blood disorder in Bangladesh. Public health experts estimate that between six and twelve per cent of the population are carriers. Each year, a significant number of children are born with transfusion dependent forms of the condition, requiring uninterrupted medical care from early childhood.

For low income families, the cumulative cost of regular transfusions, iron chelation therapy and hospital visits imposes sustained financial and psychological strain. Inadequate storage facilities and outdated equipment further increase clinical risk.

Professor Rahman emphasised that establishing modern transfusion infrastructure would substantially reduce preventable complications and improve therapeutic efficacy. Ziaul Karim noted that investment in life saving healthcare remains a central pillar of the bank’s social responsibility strategy, arguing that targeted support in high risk health sectors generates enduring social dividends.

Through this initiative, both organisations have reaffirmed their commitment to building a safer, more efficient and sustainable treatment environment for thalassaemia patients across the country.
