Economy Stabilised but No Relief in Livelihoods

At a seminar held in a hotel in the capital titled ‘365 Days of the Interim Government,’ speakers discussed the one-year performance of the interim government’s agenda.

They noted that while a major economic crisis has been averted, the general population has yet to experience relief in their daily lives and livelihoods. Weaknesses remain evident in education, healthcare, agriculture, law enforcement, and social security.

Brigadier General (Retd.) Dr M Sakawat Hossain, Adviser on Shipping and Labour to the interim government, stated that over the past 15 years, the structures of all sectors in Bangladesh have been dismantled. He criticised lawless politics and conflicts of interest for disrupting all development plans. He also emphasised the need for police reforms and highlighted ongoing crises in the labour sector.

Dr Ahsan H Mansur, Governor of Bangladesh Bank, explained that although inflation has come under control, investment has declined. He said reforms in the banking sector and new banking laws are underway. Dr Mansur stressed the importance of keeping the financial sector above political influence.

Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, member of the BNP Standing Committee, said the primary task of the interim government is to restore democracy. He added that imposed reforms are not sustainable, and a change in political culture is urgently required.

Fahmida Khatun, Executive Director of CPD, noted that a major economic collapse has been prevented within the year, but inflation remains high and investment stagnant. She emphasised the need to continue ongoing programmes for the poor.

Distinguished guests from various sectors shared their views on labour markets, the banking sector, political processes, health, and media reforms during the event. Preparations for the upcoming national election were also discussed.
