week, consumers have received some respite in the egg market, where prices have eased slightly due to improved supply and moderate demand. In contrast, fish and chicken prices have remained largely unchanged, maintaining the high levels seen over recent weeks.
A market survey conducted on Friday morning (16 January) in Ramapura and Banshree revealed the current trends. Retailers reported that farm-produced eggs are now sold at BDT 110 per dozen, down from BDT 120 a month ago. White eggs are priced between BDT 120–125, while local duck eggs range from BDT 190–200 per dozen.
Egg traders attribute the price drop to the seasonal abundance of vegetables and local fish, which reduces pressure on eggs as a protein source. In the wholesale market, the price per egg has fallen below BDT 8.
Egg Market Observations:
Retail demand has not increased significantly despite falling prices.
Consumers are opting for vegetables and fish instead, limiting egg purchases.
In the meat sector, prices have remained stable. Beef ranges from BDT 750–950 per kilogram, and goat meat is sold at BDT 1,200 per kilogram. Despite stability in figures, many consumers feel these prices remain unaffordable.
Chicken prices also show little variation. Broiler chicken is retailed at BDT 170–180 per kilogram, while the golden variety (Sonali) is sold at BDT 270–280. Traders report that supply and demand are nearly balanced, keeping prices steady. One Banshree vendor noted that farmers prefer not to hold stock for long periods in winter, ensuring a regular market supply without causing price fluctuations.
The fish market continues to challenge consumers with high prices. Popular varieties are sold as follows:
| Fish Type | Price (BDT/kg) |
|---|---|
| Coral | 700–900 |
| Ilish (>1 kg) | 2,200–2,500 |
| Ilish (>2 kg) | 2,600–3,000 |
| Pangash / Silver Carp | 200–280 |
| Tilapia (large) | 250–300 |
| Tengra | 600–700 |
| Rui / Katla | 350–450 |
| Shing | 400–500 |
| Shrimp (large) | 750–1,200 |
| Shrimp (small) | 1,000–1,200 |
Consumers lament that bargaining opportunities are limited in the fish market. One office worker noted, “Egg prices are down, which is good, but fish prices remain high, making it difficult to balance the monthly budget.”
Overall, while increased supply has brought temporary relief in the egg market, chicken prices remain static, and fish continues to burden household expenses. Consumers now watch closely, hoping for further price adjustments in poultry and seafood.
