Eid Brings Joy Inside Manikganj Prison

Manikganj, Bangladesh – Even behind four walls, the spirit of Eid can reach those living in confinement. In an extraordinary gesture of humanity, the authorities at Manikganj District Jail organised a series of special celebrations to bring the festive cheer of Eid-ul-Fitr to inmates, offering them a rare reprieve from the monotony of prison life.

The festivities began on Saturday, 21 March, at 9:00 am with a congregational Eid prayer held inside the prison grounds. In a remarkable display of solidarity, both inmates and on-duty prison officers prayed shoulder to shoulder. Following the prayer, the participants exchanged greetings, hugs, and well-wishes, bridging the divide between confinement and community through the spirit of the festival.

Festive Meals and Cultural Activities

From Eid day through the subsequent three days, inmates were treated to specially prepared meals, reflecting an upgraded menu designed to enhance the festive atmosphere. Prison Superintendent Humayun Kabir Khan and other officials ensured that home-style dishes were permitted, giving prisoners the comfort of family meals in a controlled environment.

In the afternoon of Eid, the prison hosted a cultural programme for the inmates, featuring performances and entertainment that transformed the prison environment and provided a sense of normalcy and joy.

Recreational Initiatives

On the third day of celebrations, authorities organised a friendly cricket match within the prison compound. Speaking about the initiative, Syed Javed Hossain, District Official, said:
“With around 500 inmates currently in Manikganj prison, working closely with them feels like sharing in their confined life. Organising entertainment like a cricket match allows us to share moments of joy and camaraderie.”

In addition, inmates were granted special privileges this year, including:

  • Direct visits with family members
  • Five minutes of free phone calls
  • Consumption of home-cooked meals over three consecutive days

These measures, according to Subedar Habibur Rahman Habib, helped inmates feel closer to their families and alleviated some of the emotional strain of imprisonment, allowing them to experience Eid in a more inclusive and humane way.
