Eid Meat Dispute Sparks Violent Clashes

A seemingly minor dispute over the distribution of sacrificial meat during Eid has escalated into a violent confrontation in Narail’s Kalia upazila, leaving at least 25 people injured. The incident occurred at approximately 8:30 pm on Monday in Nowagram village, highlighting how longstanding local rivalries can quickly erupt into serious unrest.

According to police and local sources, Nowagram has for some time been divided between two rival factions competing for local dominance. One group is led by Israil Sheikh, while the opposing faction is headed by Khairul Molla. Tensions between the two sides had reportedly been simmering beneath the surface, awaiting a trigger.

That trigger came during Eid celebrations on Saturday, when a cow was slaughtered by followers of Israil Sheikh. Allegations arose that a member of Khairul Molla’s group was denied a share of the meat. What initially began as a verbal altercation over this perceived slight soon intensified, fuelling resentment and heightening tensions within the community.

The situation deteriorated dramatically on Monday evening, when members of both factions engaged in a conflict involving Locally made weapons. Eyewitness accounts suggest that crude weapons such as sticks and sharp weapon were used, and at one stage, ‘Pellets’—a type of improvised pellet shot—was fired. The use of such weapons significantly increased the severity of the incident, resulting in injuries to at least 25 individuals from both sides.

Of the the wounded, 14 were taken to Narail District Hospital for treatment. Dr Alok Kumar Bagchi, who was on duty in the emergency department, confirmed that all 14 patients had sustained injuries from pellet shots. Fortunately, he noted that none of the the wounded were in critical condition, and all were declared out of danger after receiving medical care.

Law enforcement authorities responded promptly to the situation. Police arrived at the scene shortly after the violence erupted and managed to bring the situation under control. Additional police personnel have since been deployed in the in the areato prevent further conflict and maintain public order.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (Kalia Circle) Robin Halder stated that campaign are ongoing to identify and apprehend those responsible. already 14 individuals have been detained in connection with the incident. Legal proceedings are currently underway, and authorities have assured that strict action will be taken against those involved.
