In a notable recognition of outstanding contributions across various fields, the Government of Bangladesh has announced the recipients of the 2026 Ekushey Padak, the nation’s second-highest civilian award. Among the nine distinguished individuals honoured this year, one institution has also been recognised: the country’s iconic rock band, Warfaze.
The announcement came as a delightful surprise to the band, who were in the midst of rehearsals for an upcoming concert. On hearing the news, the members expressed sheer elation. Speaking to Prothom Alo, Sheikh Monirul Alam Tipu, the band’s leader, said:
“We were preparing for a performance when we received this incredible news. It is beyond words to describe our emotions. Perhaps for the first time, a band is receiving the nation’s highest recognition of this kind.”
Tipu emphasised that this achievement belongs not only to the current members but also to every past member and the entire support network behind the scenes. He added:
“This award is for everyone who has walked this journey with us. Every member, every backstage contributor, and our families who have made countless sacrifices—this is all of theirs. We are also deeply grateful to our audience and the media; without you, Warfaze would be meaningless.”
The 2026 list also features prominent figures from the country’s entertainment industry. The late Ayub Bachchu, a legendary rock musician, and acclaimed actress Farida Akhter Babita have been posthumously recognised for their exceptional contributions. In addition, Islam Uddin Palakar has been honoured for his work in theatre, while Orthi Ahmed has received the award for excellence in dance.
Shafiqul Alam, the press secretary to the Principal Adviser, confirmed these appointments during a briefing held on Thursday, 5 February, at the Foreign Service Academy auditorium in Dhaka.
For clarity, a summary of the entertainment sector recipients is provided below:
