Elderly British Couple Return Home After Taliban Release

An elderly British couple, Peter Reynolds (80) and his wife Barbie (76), returned to the United Kingdom on Saturday after being held in Afghanistan by the Taliban authorities for nearly eight months.

They arrived at London Heathrow Airport on a flight from Doha, Qatar, where they had spent time undergoing medical checks following their release on Friday. Qatar played a pivotal role in securing their freedom amid growing concerns over the couple’s deteriorating health.

Barbie Reynolds smiled as they emerged from the arrivals hall but did not speak to the waiting press. They were accompanied by their daughter, Sarah Entwhistle, and Richard Lindsay, the UK’s special representative to Afghanistan.

The Reynolds family expressed their “immense joy” at the news of their release. Emotional reunions occurred in Doha, where Sarah Entwhistle met the couple after their flight from Kabul.

In a joint statement on Friday, their four children said: “This experience has reminded us of the power of diplomacy, empathy and international cooperation. While the road to recovery will be long as our parents regain their health and spend time with their family, today is a day of tremendous joy and relief.”

Peter and Barbie Reynolds were arrested in February 2025 while returning to their home in Bamiyan province, central Afghanistan.

According to UN experts, they were initially held in a maximum-security facility, then moved to underground cells without daylight, before being transferred to the intelligence services in Kabul. The Taliban authorities have not provided a public explanation for the detention.

The couple, who married in Kabul in 1970, have lived in Afghanistan for nearly two decades, running educational programmes for women and children. They also acquired Afghan citizenship. Despite the return of the Taliban to power in 2021, they remained in Afghanistan against the advice of the British embassy.

Speaking at Kabul airport before their departure, Barbie Reynolds said the couple had been treated well in detention and expressed eagerness to reunite with their children: “We are looking forward to seeing our children and returning to Afghanistan if we can. We are Afghan citizens.”

Their son, Jonathan Reynolds, told the BBC: “They have not just a heart for the people of Afghanistan, but also strategy. Their work has been very fruitful and has had a massively positive impact.”

In July, UN human rights experts called on the Taliban to release the couple, warning that delayed action could lead to irreparable harm or even death, given the couple’s failing health. Their family had repeatedly appealed for their release.

On Friday, Taliban foreign ministry spokesman Abdul Qahar Balkhi stated that the couple had “violated the laws of Afghanistan” but were released “following the judicial process.”

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer described the news as a “huge relief” to the family.

The British government continues to advise against travel to Afghanistan, citing extremely limited consular assistance. Since the Taliban’s return to power in August 2021, the government has implemented a strict version of Islamic law, drawing criticism for widespread human rights violations.

Russia remains the only country to officially recognise the Taliban government. Since 2021, dozens of foreign nationals have been arrested, highlighting the ongoing risks for expatriates and international workers in the country.
