Elderly Night Guard Found Brutally Murdered in Rauzan

Police in Rauzan, Chattogram, have recovered the mutilated body of Shafiul Alam Chowdhury, also known as Shafi (70), nearly 41 hours after he went missing. The victim, a long-serving night guard at a local market, was discovered with his eyes gouged out.

The gruesome discovery was made at 11 a.m. on Saturday, 20 December 2025, in an open, walled-off area beside Jungle Rauzan Government Primary School in Ward 9 of Rauzan Municipality. Shafi was a resident of Guha Mia Chowdhury house in Wahedkhil village, and the son of the late Amir Ali Chowdhury.

According to local sources, Shafi had been working as a night guard in Charabattol Market, Ward 9, for almost a year.

Shafi’s wife, Dilu Ara Begum, told police that he left home on Thursday evening at 6 p.m. carrying dinner for the market but never returned. Despite searching in multiple locations, his family could not locate him, prompting the filing of a general diary (GD) at Rauzan Police Station on Friday night.

The body was reportedly first spotted by a local resident named Sujon, who alerted the family. Upon arriving at the scene, the family identified Shafi, after which the police recovered the body.

Shafi’s son, Ishaq Chowdhury, alleged that his father had been deliberately murdered, demanding a thorough investigation and exemplary punishment for the perpetrators.

Shafi’s brother-in-law, Md. Jasim Uddin, suggested that the killing might be connected to a recent altercation in the market with a mentally unstable individual, although the identities of those responsible remain unknown.

Rauzan Police Station Officer-in-Charge, Sajedul Islam, confirmed that a post-mortem report has been prepared and the body has been sent to Chattogram Medical College Hospital morgue for further examination.

Assistant Police Superintendent (Rangunia Circle), Belayet Hossain, stated that the police recovered the body from the site promptly, and the official cause of death will be determined following the post-mortem. Authorities have assured that all necessary legal actions are being taken.
