In a significant move aimed at facilitating smoother traffic flow, the Elevated Expressway in Dhaka will be toll-free for a period of four hours on Thursday, 25 December. This decision coincides with the return of BNP acting chairman, Tarique Rahman, to Bangladesh, and is expected to ease congestion on one of the city’s busiest roadways.
The announcement was officially made on Wednesday, 24 December, through a press release issued by the Press Wing of the Chief Adviser’s office. According to the statement, the toll-free initiative will be in effect from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM, covering the stretch of the expressway connecting the airport area to central Dhaka.
Motorists and commuters travelling during this window will be able to use the Elevated Expressway without paying any toll fees. Authorities have indicated that the measure is intended to accommodate the anticipated increase in traffic volume as people travel to and from the airport, as well as across the city, on the day of the political leader’s arrival.
The decision has been welcomed by daily commuters, transport operators, and city residents who frequently experience congestion during peak hours on the expressway. Experts predict that this temporary toll waiver could significantly reduce traffic bottlenecks and improve travel times along the crucial route.
For easy reference, the toll-free schedule is summarised below:
| Date | Day | Toll-Free Duration | Expressway Section |
|---|---|---|---|
| 25 December 2025 | Thursday | 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM | Airport area to central Dhaka |
Authorities have urged all road users to maintain traffic discipline and follow the designated lanes to ensure smooth movement during the toll-free period. Traffic police will be deployed along key points of the expressway to manage the expected surge in vehicles and prevent any potential congestion.
This initiative reflects the city administration’s ongoing efforts to improve urban mobility and provide temporary relief for commuters during high-traffic events. It also underscores the importance of proactive planning in managing Dhaka’s increasingly congested road networks, particularly during significant national events or political occasions.
