The Oval will host the climactic fifth and final Test of a thrilling England-India series on Thursday, as both teams struggle under the strain of mental and physical fatigue from an intensely packed schedule.
Over the past seven weeks, the sides have contested five gruelling Test matches, each going the distance — a challenge most notably felt by their respective pace attacks.
India, despite trailing 2–1, remarkably remain in contention to square the series 2–2 after pulling off a dramatic draw in the fourth Test at Old Trafford, where they occupied the crease for 143 overs in their second innings.
Tensions escalated at the close of that Test when Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar were allowed to complete their centuries, even after England captain Ben Stokes had offered to settle for a draw — a move that adds an extra edge to the final encounter at The Oval.
India Contemplate Bumrah’s Availability
India’s bowling spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, returning after a previous back injury, was originally scheduled to appear in just three Tests during this series. Having reached that limit at Old Trafford — where he bowled 33 demanding overs for two wickets on a placid pitch — his participation in the finale remains uncertain.
Despite that, India coach Gautam Gambhir has confirmed that all of India’s fast bowlers, including Akash Deep, are fit and available. Akash had impressed with 10 wickets in the second Test at Edgbaston, though he later missed the fourth Test due to a groin injury sustained at Lord’s.
England Face Dilemma Over Archer and Stokes
For England, there’s concern over whether to field Jofra Archer once more. The express paceman has delivered nearly 90 overs across two Tests, after returning from a four-year injury hiatus.
Adding to the pressure, England’s bowlers struggled at Old Trafford, with just four wickets claimed in India’s determined second innings. Brydon Carse faced heavy workload, prompting selectors to call up Jamie Overton, who joins a squad already bolstered by Josh Tongue and Gus Atkinson.
Meanwhile, all eyes are on captain Ben Stokes, who has now bowled a series-high 140 overs, taking 17 wickets — the most by any player on either side. At Old Trafford, he made history by becoming only the fourth Englishman to score a century and claim five wickets in the same Test.
However, signs of wear were visible as Stokes clutched his thigh and bicep in pain during the match. With the Ashes series in Australia looming, there are growing concerns about his workload.
“Bowling and being in the field is tough work, so I am pretty sore,” admitted Stokes. “We are going in 2–1 up, but we want to put that last big performance in.”
Shubman Gill’s Historic Run Surge
Indian captain Shubman Gill is enjoying a phenomenal debut series as skipper, continuing his rich vein of form with a resolute century at Old Trafford — his fourth hundred of the series.
Entering at a precarious 0–2, Gill produced a monumental 103 off 238 balls, anchoring India’s rearguard and laying the foundation for a memorable draw.
In doing so, Gill set a new benchmark for the most runs by an Indian batsman in a series against England — 722 runs, surpassing Yashasvi Jaiswal’s 712 from the 2023/24 season.
At The Oval, he has the opportunity to break Sunil Gavaskar’s longstanding India record of 774 runs, achieved in a four-match series against the West Indies in 1971.
However, India will be without vice-captain Rishabh Pant, who fractured his foot in Manchester — a significant blow to the batting lineup.
