Espanyol Stun Atletico Madrid in La Liga Opener

Espanyol produced a dramatic late comeback to secure a 2-1 victory over Atletico Madrid on Sunday, handing Diego Simeone’s side a disappointing start to the La Liga season.

The decisive moment came when Pere Milla headed home Omar El Hilali’s cross in the 84th minute, completing a turnaround that stunned the visitors in Barcelona.

Atletico had taken the lead through Julian Alvarez, who curled a free-kick into the top corner in the 37th minute, leaving Espanyol goalkeeper Marko Dmitrovic with no chance.

Alvarez nearly doubled the lead just before the hour mark but struck the post, giving Espanyol a lifeline. Seventeen minutes from time, Miguel Rubio scored from a set-piece to level the match, setting up Milla’s late winner.

“It was a hard-fought match, and Espanyol showed great character to come back,” a post-match analyst said.

Simeone’s side has been busy in the transfer market over the summer, bringing in Alex Baena, David Hancko, Johnny Cardoso, and Giacomo Raspadori to strengthen the squad for a title challenge against Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Meanwhile, Angel Correa, Rodrigo De Paul, and Cesar Azpilicueta have departed as part of a squad rebuild. Atletico finished third last season, 12 points behind champions Barcelona.
