Ex-MP’s Wife in ICU After Overdose

The wife of a former Bangladeshi Member of Parliament is receiving intensive care after an apparent suicide attempt that followed a distressing message posted on social media.

Khadija Mallick, also known as Shimu, the second wife of former MP Shibli Sadiq, was admitted to a private cardiac hospital in Dinajpur on Monday evening after reportedly ingesting an excessive quantity of sleeping tablets. According to family members, the incident occurred while she was staying at her father’s residence in Hakimpur town. She was taken to hospital at around 8:15 pm and is currently being treated in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

Medical staff attending to her condition have stated that she is now stable, although still under close observation. The attending physician confirmed that she was admitted shortly after the overdose and continues to receive supportive care in the ICU.

Shibli Sadiq, a former lawmaker representing the Dinajpur-6 constituency—comprising Birampur, Nawabganj, Ghoraghat and Hakimpur—has reportedly remained out of public view since the political unrest in July. Since that period, Khadija Mallick had been residing at her parental home.

Prior to the incident, Khadija posted a deeply emotional message on her verified Facebook page, indicating prolonged distress. In the post, she wrote that despite being strong and having faith in God, she felt exhausted after enduring what she described as seven years of injustice and hardship in her personal life. She expressed a desire for rest, stating that she could no longer continue living under such strain.

In the same message, she appeared to refer to ongoing marital difficulties and named individuals whom she held responsible for her suffering. She also addressed her daughter, expressing gratitude and offering prayers for her well-being, while seeking forgiveness from her parents.

Family sources have revealed that Khadija had been experiencing both physical and psychological health challenges in recent months, reportedly linked to ongoing marital tensions. She had been prescribed sleeping medication and was under medical advice to take them regularly. However, on the day of the incident, she consumed a significantly higher dosage than prescribed.
