A former New York State prison guard has been convicted of murder and manslaughter in connection with the beating death of a Black inmate, an incident that reignited debate over racism and brutality in the US prison system, local authorities announced on Monday.

The case, which involved ten correctional officers, has drawn widespread outrage across the United States since the fatal assault occurred last December.

Robert Brooks, aged 43, was serving a 12-year sentence for assault when he was fatally beaten while handcuffed inside the Marcy Correctional Facility in upstate New York. The assault took place overnight between 9 and 10 December, and Brooks died hours later from his injuries.

The brutal beating was captured on body-camera footage, later released by New York Attorney General Letitia James. The distressing video shows Brooks, his face covered in blood, being struck repeatedly while restrained on an infirmary bed, surrounded by several officers.

At one point, as Brooks attempts to sit up, one officer dons surgical gloves, seizes him by the collar, and, with assistance from another guard, slams him violently against a wall.

The indictment, issued by Special Prosecutor William Fitzpatrick, stated that Kingsley acted with “depraved indifference to human life, recklessly engaged in conduct which created a grave risk of death to another person, and thereby caused the death of Robert Brooks.”

While David Kingsley was found guilty of both murder and manslaughter, two fellow officers, Matthew Galliher and Nicholas Kieffer, were acquitted of similar charges.

Meanwhile, five others pleaded guilty to manslaughter before the trial began, and one officer pleaded guilty to lesser charges. Another defendant is scheduled to stand trial in January.

Brooks’ death was officially ruled a homicide, adding to the growing list of fatal incidents linked to excessive force within American correctional facilities.

The case has reignited concerns over systemic abuse and racial injustice within US law enforcement. It echoes the broader outrage that followed the 2020 murder of George Floyd, an African-American man whose death under police restraint in Minneapolis sparked a nationwide and global movement against police brutality and racial discrimination.

Civil rights advocates have called for comprehensive reforms within the US prison and policing systems, stressing the urgent need for greater accountability, independent oversight, and body-camera transparency in all detention facilities.

The New York Attorney General’s Office has pledged continued efforts to pursue justice in this case and ensure that such acts of inhumanity and misconduct within the correctional system do not go unpunished.
