Kushtia, Bangladesh – The tragic death of Asma Sadia Runna, head of the Department of Social Welfare and assistant professor at Islamic University (IU), has been officially attributed to excessive blood loss, according to a preliminary post-mortem report conducted at Kushtia Sadar Hospital. Medical experts confirmed that multiple injuries were found on her body, with a critical wound to the neck being fatal.
Dr Imam Hossain, the Resident Medical Officer (RMO) at Kushtia Sadar Hospital, confirmed the findings on Thursday, 5 March. He stated that a deep incision was observed on the lower right side of Runna’s neck, inflicted by a sharp weapon such as a knife. The wound severed a major blood vessel, leading to substantial internal and external bleeding. According to Dr Hossain:
“The excessive blood loss from the neck wound was the primary cause of death. In addition, we observed multiple injuries across her body, including the chest, back, abdomen, and arms—approximately twenty in total. These were defensive wounds sustained while she attempted to protect herself and were not life-threatening.”
A medical board was convened to examine the incident, comprising Dr Imam Hossain (RMO), Medical Officer Rumon Rahman, and Sumaiya Jannat. While the hospital has indicated that further forensic examination is not currently required, the board will issue a final, formal report confirming the findings.
The fatal incident occurred on Wednesday, 4 March, around 4:00 pm, inside the Faculty of Theology and Islamic Studies building of IU. According to eyewitnesses and initial police reports, a former employee of the Social Welfare Department, Fazlur Rahman, attacked Runna with a knife in an apparent attempted suicide incident. Both the assailant and the victim were discovered in a bloodied state by university authorities and the IU police.
They were immediately transported to Kushtia Sadar Hospital, where medical staff pronounced Asma Sadia Runna dead on arrival. Fazlur Rahman survived the incident and was taken into police custody for further investigation.

Dr Hossain emphasised that the preliminary post-mortem clearly indicated the cause of death, with the neck wound being fatal. He added that the hospital’s medical board would finalise the report, providing authoritative documentation for legal proceedings.
IU authorities and police have opened an investigation into the incident, focusing on the motives behind the attack and the circumstances leading to this tragic event. University officials have urged staff and students to remain calm while the inquiry proceeds.
This shocking event has drawn attention to workplace safety and the potential for conflicts to escalate into violence, even in academic institutions. Experts highlight the importance of conflict management, early intervention, and security measures to prevent similar tragedies in educational settings.
