Exciting Start to the New Year as Neymar Extends His Stay at Santos

After weeks of speculation, the long-awaited news has finally been confirmed. On Wednesday, Brazilian club Santos FC officially announced the renewal of their contract with star forward Neymar, ensuring that the 33-year-old will remain at the club until 31 December 2026. The Brazilian media outlet Globo reported the confirmation.

Negotiations between the club and Neymar’s representatives had been ongoing for several weeks. This marks Neymar’s third contract with Santos since his return. In 2025, Santos signed him twice for six-month stints. The latest agreement is for a full year, demonstrating the club’s commitment to retaining their iconic player.

According to Santos sources cited by Globo, an official announcement will follow within the next few hours. Under the terms of the contract, Neymar will remain with Santos throughout the tenure of club president Marcelo Teixeira. The club had been optimistic about retaining Neymar after the conclusion of the Brazilian league, despite his previous contract expiring on 31 December 2025. Club directors had anticipated that the discussions might extend until the last moment — and indeed, they did.

Remarkably, Santos is paying Neymar a monthly salary equivalent to that of four to five average players in Europe, despite him being a Champions League-winning star at Barcelona. In addition to his playing contract, Neymar’s image rights are secured through a separate agreement with his family-owned company, NR Sports, amounting to BRL 85 million, payable by the end of the coming year.

From the outset, Santos had planned to retain Neymar until mid-2026, coinciding with the World Cup period. The club never intended to part ways with their marquee player. Neymar and his representatives, however, approached the negotiations methodically, prioritising a realistic agreement. Currently, Neymar is focused on rehabilitation following a left knee meniscus surgery, with a return to the pitch before mid-February considered unlikely. Santos’ medical team is overseeing his recovery closely.

This contract renewal brings immense joy to Santos fans and holds special significance in a World Cup year. Neymar will need to perform in the upcoming season to strengthen his claim for a spot in the Brazilian national squad, where he last played in October 2023.

In the recently concluded season, Neymar’s efforts were pivotal in ensuring Santos avoided relegation. Despite his injury, he played the final three matches, helping Santos achieve 3–0 victories in each, scoring goals, providing assists, and even completing a hat-trick.
