Two men were killed and three others injured in an explosion at a house in Fattapara village, Charbagdanga Union, Chapainawabganj, on Saturday morning. According to Mohammad Shahjahan, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of the Rajshahi Range, the blast occurred while the individuals were reportedly attempting to manufacture explosives. However, the family of one of the injured contends that their son had gone to the location for a picnic, and that the deaths and injuries resulted from an alleged attack.
The deceased have been identified as Mohammad Jihad and Al-Amin, both residents of Ranihati in Chapainawabganj Sadar Upazila. Those injured include Mohammad Shuvo (22) of Ghorastand, Chapainawabganj Sadar, Minhaj Uddin (30) of Charbagdanga, and Bazlur Rahman (20), also of Charbagdanga.
| Name | Age | Village | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mohammad Jihad | N/A | Ranihati | Deceased |
| Al-Amin | N/A | Ranihati | Deceased |
| Mohammad Shuvo | 22 | Ghorastand | Injured |
| Minhaj Uddin | 30 | Charbagdanga | Injured |
| Bazlur Rahman | 20 | Charbagdanga | Injured |
The explosion occurred at the residence of Kalam Ali in Fattapara, causing the tin roof to be torn off and the brick walls to collapse. Jihad and Al-Amin died instantly at the scene. The injured were rushed to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RAMEC), where they are receiving treatment under police supervision. Hospital spokesman Dr Shankar Kumar Biswas confirmed that the three patients have sustained facial burns but are in stable condition.
Shuvo’s mother, Fauzia Khatun, said her son works as a tractor driver and construction labourer. “He left home around 10 pm saying he was going for a picnic. Initially he hesitated due to feeling unwell, but finally went after repeated phone calls,” she explained. She believes the deaths were caused by an attack during the outing, though she lacks full details.
DIG Shahjahan clarified that no picnic was taking place. “This was not an attack. They were manufacturing explosives when a blast occurred, destroying walls and tearing off the roof,” he said. The police and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) were alerted early Saturday and found the two bodies inside the house. The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is collecting evidence. According to Shahjahan, the house was modest and suggested financial difficulties, and the owner, Kalam Ali, has not yet been located.
Local residents report that several individuals in the area are involved in manufacturing bombs and improvised explosive devices, often at night. They reportedly supply explosives to political parties in exchange for money, although they are not formal party members. Kalam Ali, however, is known to support the ruling Awami League.
Earlier on Saturday, former BNP candidate and ex-MP Harunur Rashid visited the scene. He alleged that both Jamaat and Awami League members collaborate in producing explosives for political violence. Local Awami League leaders and Charbagdanga Union’s former chairman Omar Ali were present during his visit.
Security has been increased in the area while the investigation continues, with authorities urging locals to remain cautious.
