In a significant crackdown on illicit activities within campus grounds, the administration of Jahangirnagar University (JU) has recovered a substantial cache of foreign liquor from an on-campus residential hall. During a late-night operation conducted on Sunday, 4 January, university authorities seized 21 bottles of foreign-branded alcohol from a dormitory room, leading to the immediate detention of a third-year student. The raid has sparked concerns regarding campus security and the influence of cross-border smuggling networks within educational institutions.
The operation, which took place at approximately 10:00 pm, was a coordinated effort between the administration of Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam Hall and the elected Hall Union. Acting on a specific intelligence tip-off, the joint task force targeted Room 723 of the residential hall. Upon entering the premises, they discovered the extensive collection of contraband beverages. The individual detained at the scene has been identified as Fazle Ajwad, a student of the Government and Politics Department. Investigations revealed that Ajwad is the son of a prominent local political figure from Jamalpur district, whose father formerly served as the President of the Pararampur Union Awami League.
Preliminary findings from the hall administration indicate that Ajwad was not a legitimate resident of the dormitory. Despite having no official entitlement to campus housing, he had reportedly been occupying the room illegally for an extended period. Sources suggest that the seized alcohol was smuggled across the Bangladesh-India border near the Tartia area. It is alleged that the contraband was procured through a local distributor identified as ‘Salman,’ who facilitated the transport of the illicit goods from the frontier to the university premises.
Professor Abdur Razzaque, the Provost of Kazi Nazrul Islam Hall, confirmed the details of the seizure to the media. He stated that the administration acted swiftly upon receiving credible information regarding the presence of narcotics within the hall. He emphasised that the university maintains a zero-tolerance policy towards illegal substances and confirmed that disciplinary proceedings would be initiated in accordance with the university’s statutory regulations. Following a comprehensive internal inquiry, further legal actions may be pursued against those involved in the smuggling ring.
