Fake DB tries to handcuff former Chhatra Dal leader in Mymensingh

In a shocking incident in Trishal, Mymensingh, a former student leader was targeted by imposters posing as Detective Branch (DB) officers. The assailants attempted to abduct him by forcibly handcuffing him, but the quick intervention of local residents foiled their plan. Fire service personnel later had to be called in to remove the handcuffs. The episode occurred on Wednesday night at around 10:00 PM in the Bir Rampur area of the upazila.

According to police and eyewitnesses, Rezaul Karim, 32, the recently retired president of the Ramapur Union unit of Chhatra Dal, was returning home from Gofakuri Bazar when five men, claiming to be DB officers, intercepted him. They swiftly handcuffed Rezaul, while two of the men reportedly beat him and attempted to lead him towards a secluded field. Suspecting foul play, Rezaul began shouting for help, attracting a crowd. Realising the situation had escalated, the imposters fled the scene in a CNG-run auto rickshaw.

Rezaul’s elder brother contacted the district DB and Trishal police, only to confirm that no official DB team had been operating in the area. Attempts by local police to remove the handcuffs initially failed, prompting fire service personnel to cut the restraints. Rezaul was subsequently admitted to the Trishal Upazila Health Complex for treatment.

Speaking about the incident, Rezaul’s brother Enamul Karim said, “We need to know what alleged crime my brother committed. Why was he being beaten? Did they have a warrant? Where were their arms or walkie-talkies?” He added that the imposters fled immediately after realising they were being watched.

Rezaul Karim himself suggested that the attack could be linked to a protest he led on 28 November, where he and others marched in symbolic shrouds demanding changes in BNP’s nominations in the Trishal constituency.

Trishal police officer-in-charge Firoz Hossain confirmed that the attack was motivated by a personal grudge, with the assailants masquerading as DB personnel. “The victim was injured but is now receiving medical care. The handcuffs used were old police property, now secured at the police station. We have advised filing a formal complaint, and legal action will follow,” he added.
