Fake Plate, Helmet Recovered in Hadi Attack

Authorities have successfully recovered the motorcycle and helmet used in the violent attack on Sharif Osman Hadi, spokesperson of the Inquilab platform. In a significant breakthrough, the forged number plate used on the motorcycle during the incident was also retrieved from a manhole. All items have since been handed over to the Detective Branch of the police for further investigation.

According to a press release issued on Wednesday, the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime Unit (CTTC) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police recovered the items last Sunday morning at approximately 8:45 am from an abandoned parking area in the Bonolota residential zone of Agargaon, Dhaka. This recovery marks an important step in the ongoing investigation into the December 12 attack.

The attack occurred in the Purana Paltan area of the capital, where assailants fired at Hadi while he was travelling in a rickshaw. Hadi, a prospective candidate for the Dhaka-8 constituency and convenor of the Inquilab platform, was critically injured and subsequently transferred to Singapore on Monday for advanced medical treatment.

CTTC sources revealed that a dedicated investigative team meticulously analysed CCTV footage to uncover the tampering of the motorcycle’s number plate. Acting on confidential intelligence, the team located the motorcycle and helmet in the basement parking of a private residence in West Agargaon. The forged number plate was later discovered in a nearby manhole, discarded in a concealed manner.

The ownership trail of the motorcycle was found to be highly convoluted. Initially registered to an individual named Abdur Rahman, the vehicle changed hands eight times before ultimately being acquired by Mainuddin Islam. Investigators determined that Mainuddin purchased the motorcycle using the National ID of Md. Kabir, an associate of the primary suspect, Foysal Karim.

Police have identified the main perpetrators as Foysal Karim, former leader of the banned student organisation Chhatra League, and his accomplice Almgeer Sheikh, both of whom are currently believed to be in India. Law enforcement and intelligence agencies are actively pursuing their capture.

Officials stressed that this recovery and the ongoing investigation are expected to accelerate the process of identifying and apprehending all those responsible for the attack. Authorities hope that the swift arrest of the suspects will reinforce law and order, ensuring the safety of citizens and maintaining public confidence in the justice system.
