Families Mourn After Comilla Train-Bus Tragedy

Twelve people lost their lives in a tragic collision between a passenger bus and a train in Comilla’s Sadar South area, authorities have confirmed. The deceased include seven men, two women, and three children, according to Md. Abdul Momin, Officer-in-Charge of the Maynamati Highway Police.

Among the victims were Laizu Akter (26) and her two daughters, Khadija Akter (6) and Morium Akter (4), all of whom were residents of Maheshpur in Jhenaidah. Police identified them as the wife and children of Pintu.

Other victims hailed from across the country, reflecting the widespread human impact of the accident. The full list of the deceased is as follows:

The accident occurred at 2:55 am on Saturday, 21 March, near the Paduar Bazar railway crossing in Comilla. The bus, operated by Mamun Transport and travelling from Chapainawabganj to Noakhali, collided head-on with a mail train en route from Chittagong to Dhaka.

The impact was catastrophic, claiming twelve lives on the spot. In addition to the fatalities, at least fifteen passengers sustained injuries and were rushed to Comilla Medical College Hospital and other regional medical facilities for treatment.

Eyewitnesses reported that the scene was chaotic, with relatives anxiously waiting outside refrigerated trucks for the victims’ bodies. Authorities have initiated investigations into the causes of the collision, including whether the bus attempted to cross the tracks despite the train approaching.

The tragedy has sparked national concern over railway safety, highlighting ongoing challenges at unmanned crossings and the need for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations to prevent further loss of life.
