Family Feud Ends in Fatal Stabbing

A longstanding family dispute turned deadly in the Sohagi Union of Ishwarganj Upazila, Mymensingh, on Tuesday night (24 March), when 60-year-old Abul Kalam was fatally stabbed by his cousin, Abul Kashem, in the village of Momrojpur.

According to local residents and police reports, Abul Kalam, son of the late Shafiquddin, was returning home from Sohagi Bazar when he encountered his cousin in the Kalpar area. A verbal confrontation, reportedly over an ongoing disagreement regarding land ownership, escalated into violence, culminating in Kashem stabbing Kalam in the chest.

Neighbours recounted hearing Kalam’s anguished cries and immediately rushing him to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital. Despite urgent medical care, doctors were unable to save him, pronouncing him dead upon arrival.

Police sources indicate that tensions between the two cousins had been simmering for years, with multiple disputes over property boundaries recorded by the local community. Residents described both men as longstanding members of the village, respected yet embroiled in persistent disagreements.

Ishwarganj police confirmed the incident, with Officer-in-Charge Robiul Azam commenting, “This is a deeply regrettable event. We are taking all necessary legal measures against the accused and gathering further evidence to ensure justice is served.” Abul Kashem is currently in police custody while the investigation continues.

Local community members expressed shock at the violent outcome, highlighting the need for mediation mechanisms to prevent such incidents in the future.
