Fatal Broad Daylight Stabbing Over Minor Financial Dispute

Published: 18 Feb 2026, 06:50 am

A sense of profound shock and insecurity has gripped the residents of Binodpur, a locality within Rajbari municipality, following the brazen daylight murder of a local youth. The victim, identified as Zahid Fakir, 25, was attacked with sharp weapons near a local primary school field on Tuesday afternoon, 17 February 2026.

The Sequence of Events

According to family members, Zahid—the son of Mahtab Fakir—had spent the morning at his residence. Around midday, he ventured out to a field adjacent to a nearby school. It was here that he was intercepted by a group of four to five unidentified assailants.

Witnesses suggest the attackers acted with terrifying speed, wielding sharp knives and machetes to inflict multiple haphazard wounds upon the young man. As Zahid’s cries for help echoed through the neighbourhood, the perpetrators fled the scene before local residents could intervene. Despite the haste with which he was rushed to Rajbari General Hospital, attending physicians were forced to declare him deceased upon arrival due to catastrophic blood loss.

Investigation: A Tragic Dispute Over Arrears

While the victim's elder brother, Mamun Fakir, initially expressed uncertainty regarding any personal animosity, preliminary police investigations have uncovered a surprisingly mundane yet lethal motive.

Russell Mollah, the Officer-in-Charge (Investigation) of Rajbari Sadar Police Station, revealed that a group of local youths had been demanding a small sum of money from Zahid. It is alleged that the conflict escalated when Zahid refused to pay 3,500 BDT—a debt claimed by the group. This refusal apparently led the gang to resort to extreme violence to "settle" the account.

Judicial Process and Community Outcry

The brazen nature of the crime, occurring in an open area during broad daylight, has sparked outrage among the local population. Residents are demanding a swift crackdown on "bakhate" (delinquent) gangs that have reportedly become increasingly aggressive in the municipality.

Khondokar Ziaur Rahman, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Rajbari Sadar Police Station, confirmed that no arrests have been made as of Wednesday morning. "Our teams are currently conducting raids at various locations to apprehend the suspects," he stated. He added that the formal registration of a murder case is currently in progress, which will provide further clarity on the legal proceedings.

The body of the deceased has been sent for a post-mortem examination. As the community mourns, the incident serves as a grim reminder of how minor financial disputes, when combined with a culture of impunity among local gangs, can result in irreversible tragedy.
