Fatal Burglary in Rupganj Ends in Double Tragedy

A harrowing incident in the Rupganj Upazila of Narayanganj has left two people dead following a botched burglary attempt. A housewife was brutally murdered after confronting an intruder, who was subsequently beaten to death by an incensed mob. The violence unfolded on the afternoon of Friday, 16 January 2026, in the Kerabo area of Kanchan Municipality.

The Fatal Confrontation

The primary victim, identified as Amena Begum (45), was the wife of local resident Dewan Kamruzzaman Babul. According to family sources and local witnesses, the perpetrator, a young man named Mehedi, had gained intimate knowledge of the household layout just days prior. Mehedi, the son of Rezaul from the nearby Mastapur area, had been part of a workforce employed to install floor tiles in the residence earlier that week.

Exploiting this familiarity, Mehedi reportedly entered the premises on Friday afternoon under the assumption that the house was empty. However, he was intercepted by Amena Begum. When the housewife courageously attempted to thwart the theft, Mehedi produced a sharp knife and stabbed her repeatedly.

Amena Begum was rushed to a nearby private medical facility in a critical state, but despite the best efforts of the emergency staff, she was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Vigilante Justice and Police Intervention

The sound of the struggle and the victim’s cries alerted neighbours, who converged on the property as Mehedi attempted to flee the scene. The situation escalated rapidly as the local community, overcome by grief and fury, apprehended the suspect. Mehedi was subjected to a sustained “mass beating” (vigilante justice), succumbing to his injuries on the spot before law enforcement could intervene.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Mehedi Islam confirmed that police units were dispatched immediately to restore order in the locality. “Upon receiving the report, our officers moved to bring the situation under control. We have conducted the preliminary inquests (Surat hal) on both deceased individuals,” the ASP stated.
