Fatal Drum Explosion Claims Young Life in Ashuganj

A tragic industrial accident in the Ashuganj sub-district of Brahmanbaria has resulted in the death of a 12-year-old boy following a violent drum explosion. The incident occurred on Friday afternoon (30 January) at a local engineering workshop, leaving the community in shock and raising urgent questions regarding workplace safety and the handling of hazardous materials.

Circumstances of the Tragedy

The victim, identified as Mohammad Rayhan, was the son of Akbar Hossain, hailing from Chanpur village in the Raipura sub-district of Narsingdi. Rayhan, despite his young age, had been employed at a workshop in the Lalpur Bazaar area of Ashuganj.

The fatal encounter took place while Rayhan was walking past a workshop owned by Loknath Das (24). According to eyewitness accounts and preliminary reports, Das was attempting to cut open an empty chemical drum using a mechanical cutter. Critically, the drum’s bung (plug) remained tightly sealed. It is believed that combustible gases had accumulated inside the container over a prolonged period. The friction and heat from the cutting tool ignited the trapped vapours, triggering a powerful explosion.

The force of the blast sent jagged metal fragments hurtling through the air. One such piece struck Rayhan in the head with devastating force, causing fatal injuries. Although local residents rushed to his aid and attempted to transport him to Brahmanbaria District General Hospital, the youngster succumbed to his injuries en route. The workshop owner, Loknath Das, also sustained injuries in the blast and is currently receiving medical attention.

Official Response and Investigation

The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Ashuganj Police Station, Mohammad Safiul Alam Chowdhury, confirmed the details of the tragedy. Police personnel have visited the site to collect evidence and assess the mechanical failure. “We are investigating the precise cause of the explosion, specifically looking into the nature of the chemicals previously stored in the drum,” the OC stated.

The body of the deceased has been moved to the Brahmanbaria District General Hospital morgue for a post-mortem examination. Authorities have indicated that should a formal written complaint be lodged by the bereaved family, rigorous legal proceedings against the workshop owner will be initiated.

This incident underscores the perilous lack of safety protocols in small-scale industrial hubs across the region, where the intersection of child labour and hazardous technical work often leads to preventable loss of life.
