Tragedy struck the Dhaka-Rangpur Highway on Tuesday evening as a high-speed motorcycle collision resulted in the death of a 55-year-old pedestrian. The incident occurred at approximately 7:00 pm on 30 December in the Bokchar area of Gobindganj Upazila, Gaibandha, specifically in front of the Himadri Limited facility.
The victim has been identified as Rupia Begum, the wife of Sadeq Khan, residing in Bokchar Khapara village. According to local witnesses, the unfortunate event transpired as Rupia Begum was attempting to cross the busy highway. A motorcycle travelling at an excessive speed from the direction of Dhaka struck her with significant force, causing her to be thrown onto the tarmac and sustaining critical injuries.
Immediately following the impact, bystanders alerted the local emergency services. A rescue unit from the Gobindganj Fire Station arrived promptly at the scene to provide assistance. The team recovered the severely injured pedestrian along with the two occupants of the motorcycle—a husband and wife who had also fallen during the collision.
| Involved Party | Condition | Outcome |
|---|---|---|
| Rupia Begum (Pedestrian) | Critical Injuries | Pronounced dead at hospital |
| Motorcyclist (Male) | Minor Injuries | Received first aid |
| Pillion Passenger (Female) | Minor Injuries | Received first aid |
All three individuals were transported to the Gobindganj Upazila Health Complex. Upon arrival, the duty physician conducted an examination of Rupia Begum and declared her deceased. In contrast, the couple on the motorcycle sustained only minor abrasions and were deemed stable. While the identities of the couple have not yet been formally released by the authorities, it is understood they were travelling north when the accident occurred.
The Gobindganj Highway Police have confirmed the details of the accident and have commenced a formal investigation into the circumstances. The motorcycle involved has been taken into police custody as part of the evidentiary proceedings.
This incident highlights the ongoing safety concerns regarding the Dhaka-Rangpur Highway, a major arterial route notorious for high-speed traffic and frequent pedestrian crossings in residential zones. Local residents have frequently called for increased traffic calming measures and stricter enforcement of speed limits in areas such as Bokchar to prevent such heart-breaking losses of life.
Authorities are expected to hand over the body of the deceased to her family following the completion of necessary legal and medical formalities.
