Father Brings Son’s Six Remains Home in Dhaka

The six recovered fragments of Obaidullah, also known as Badal, were handed over to his family by police on Tuesday afternoon following a post-mortem examination at Dhaka Medical College. The transfer took place around 3:30 pm, as grieving relatives waited at the morgue to receive the remains.

One critical piece of the body, the chest portion, has yet to be recovered. According to family members, the post-mortem was completed despite the absence of this section, as authorities deemed it necessary to proceed.

Obaidullah was brutally murdered on Thursday night, after which his body was dismembered into seven parts and scattered across different locations in the capital. Over the following Friday and Saturday, police recovered two hands, two feet, and the head from areas including Nayapaltan, Gulistan, and Kamalapur. Fingerprints were taken from the recovered fragments to confirm the identity as Obaidullah. Shahin, a roommate, was arrested in connection with the case, and his statements led police to locate the remaining body parts.

Obaidullah (30) was the eldest son of Hamid Mia, a farmer from Tatar-Kandi village in Sadar Char Union of Shibpur upazila, Narsingdi. He had two younger brothers and two sisters and was widely known in the community by his nickname, Badal.

On Tuesday morning, Obaidullah’s father Hamid Mia, his uncle Mojibur Rahman, and younger brother Jalil Mia went to the morgue to receive the remains. After the post-mortem, the six recovered fragments were transported home in a refrigerated vehicle, arriving around 5:45 pm.

Mojibur Rahman told Prothom Alo, “We have brought six parts home. The chest fragment has not yet been recovered, but the police are still searching for it. After Maghrib prayers, a funeral will be held at the Eidgah field near our home, and he will be buried in the local cemetery.”

Obaidullah, who had completed his Higher Secondary Certificate, initially tried to save money to work abroad but was unsuccessful. About two years ago, he took a job in a small hotel in Dhaka, sharing a mess with several colleagues. Later, he switched careers to work as a marketing officer for a homeopathic medicine company. He last visited his family on 11 February and returned to Dhaka the following day after casting his vote in the national election.
