In a pulsating first T20I at Senwes Park, Potchefstroom, South Africa emerged victorious by five wickets over Pakistan, despite a remarkable career-best innings from Fatima Sana. The visitors posted a challenging 180/9, but the home side’s collective batting effort, spearheaded by skipper Laura Wolvaardt, proved decisive in a nail-biting finale.
Pakistan’s innings appeared on the brink of collapse at 64 for 6, yet Sana’s fearless counterattack turned the innings around. Coming in during the 10th over, she played an innings of 90 from just 41 deliveries, smashing seven sixes and nine fours in an innings marked by aggression and composure. Her partnership-building and boundary-hitting helped Pakistan reach a competitive total, although a late surge from South African bowlers kept the match finely poised.
Kayla Reyneke was instrumental for South Africa with the ball, producing impressive figures of 2 for 13 in four overs, including a maiden. She claimed the key wickets of Gull Feroza and Natalia Pervaiz. Ayanda Hlubi and Nonkululeko Mlaba were also effective, both picking up two wickets apiece in the first half of Pakistan’s innings, ensuring that the home side never lost control entirely.
Pakistan’s late-innings acceleration featured Mlaba conceding 19 runs in the 16th over, Hlubi leaking 21 in the 17th, and Ayabonga Khaka 19 in the final over, which allowed Sana’s boundary-laden innings to flourish. Despite her valiant effort, the total proved just shy of par.
Chasing 181, South Africa started positively with Tazmin Brits scoring briskly before falling to Humna Bilal in the fourth over. Wolvaardt and Sune Luus then consolidated, putting on a rapid 62-run partnership. Wolvaardt reached her fifty from just 31 balls, showcasing power hitting with a six and a four in the 13th over. However, Pakistan fought back, with Sandhu stumping Wolvaardt and claiming Dane van Niekerk and Lara Goodall soon after, leaving South Africa at 153/5 at the end of the 17th over.
The match went down to the final over, with South Africa needing 10 runs to win. Reyneke rose to the occasion, hitting a six off the last delivery to seal a thrilling five-wicket victory.
