Veteran freedom fighter Fazlur Rahman has secured a resounding victory in the Kishoreganj-4 constituency (Itna–Mithamain–Austagram), defeating Jamaat-e-Islami candidate Rokon Reza Sheikh by a commanding margin. The win marks a significant political development in the haor region, long regarded as electorally competitive and symbolically important.
Soon after the result was announced, Rahman took to social media to frame his triumph in historical and ideological terms. In a brief but emphatic Facebook post, he wrote: “Independence, the Liberation War, freedom fighters, Bangabandhu — the very existence of sovereign Bangladesh.” The reference to Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, widely revered as Bangabandhu, underscored the symbolic tone of his message.
In a subsequent post, Rahman elaborated further, stating that after offering Fajr prayers in the early hours, he expressed gratitude to Almighty Allah for what he described as an electoral mandate against “Razakars and anti-independence forces”. He characterised the outcome not as a personal victory but as “a clear verdict of the people in favour of the spirit of the Liberation War and independence”.
| Constituency | Winning Candidate | Party | Runner-up | Party |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kishoreganj-4 (Itna–Mithamain–Austagram) | Fazlur Rahman | BNP | Rokon Reza Sheikh | Jamaat-e-Islami |
Rahman noted that well-wishers from home and abroad had contacted him following the announcement of the results. However, due to sustained campaign pressures and post-election responsibilities, he was unable to respond to everyone individually. He said he had shared messages through television channels, newspapers, YouTube platforms and social media to convey his gratitude.
“God willing, an unwavering lamp in favour of independence and the Liberation War will burn in Parliament,” he wrote, pledging to uphold the dignity, trust and sacrifices of his supporters.
Yet amid the jubilation, Rahman expressed sorrow over the reported imprisonment of one of his campaign workers. In a video message, he lamented that his victory had been overshadowed by the sentencing of a party activist to two years in prison, leaving behind two young children. He alleged that the punishment had been handed down unjustly to appease “dark forces”.
Rahman vowed to pursue legal remedies, asserting that the worker had committed no wrongdoing. His comments suggest that, beyond the celebratory tone, the political climate in the constituency remains fraught with tension.
The election result not only strengthens Rahman’s standing within his party but also reintroduces Liberation War rhetoric into the parliamentary discourse — a theme that continues to resonate deeply in Bangladesh’s political landscape.
