FIFA is investing $50 million in a stadium for Gaza.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino has announced an ambitious plan to construct a modern football stadium in war-torn Gaza, as part of the region’s broader reconstruction efforts. The project, estimated at $50 million, aims not only to restore infrastructure but also to rebuild hope, community, and the spirit of sport among local residents.

The announcement was made during the inaugural meeting of the newly established “Board of Peace” at the United States Institute of Peace in Washington, D.C. The board has been set up to coordinate international cooperation for Gaza’s recovery, with a focus on sustainable and inclusive reconstruction initiatives.

According to FIFA, the proposed stadium will have a seating capacity ranging between 20,000 and 25,000 spectators. In addition to the main arena, plans include the establishment of a FIFA Football Academy, designed to nurture young talent and provide training facilities for aspiring footballers across the region.

The project will also extend to grassroots football development. Reports from the Associated Press indicate that funding will support the construction of 50 small football pitches and five full-sized fields across Gaza, providing communities with accessible spaces for recreation and youth development.

President Infantino emphasised the symbolic importance of football, stating: “We must rebuild not only homes, schools, hospitals, and roads but also people’s hopes, emotions, and faith. Football has the power to do exactly that.”

International support for Gaza’s reconstruction is gathering momentum. U.S. President Donald Trump pledged $10 billion in aid for the recovery effort. Additionally, nine other countries have promised a combined $7 billion, while five nations have expressed willingness to contribute troops for an international stability mission in the region.

Although Gaza does not have a separate national football team, FIFA has recognised a unified Palestinian team representing both Gaza and the West Bank since 1998. The new stadium is expected to strengthen football infrastructure and offer a central hub for sporting and community events in the region.

The initiative represents one of the largest sports-related reconstruction projects in Gaza and highlights the role of football as a vehicle for social cohesion and international solidarity. With combined efforts from FIFA, governments, and local communities, the stadium is poised to become a symbol of hope, resilience, and the unifying power of sport in a region long affected by conflict.
