Gianni Infantino, the president of the international football governing body FIFA, has found himself at the centre of a controversy after presenting a peace award to United States President Donald Trump. The incident took place on 5 December during the World Cup draw event, where Trump was formally handed the award.
Since the presentation of the award, Infantino has faced widespread criticism. Experts argue that awarding Trump in this manner constitutes a breach of FIFA’s policy of political neutrality. The timing and context, particularly giving such an honour to a serving political leader, are being viewed as a direct violation of the organisation’s principles of impartiality.
Human rights organisation ‘Fairsquare’ has filed a formal complaint, stating that Infantino violated four clear rules regarding political neutrality within FIFA. The organisation has requested FIFA’s ethics committee to initiate an investigation against him. According to the complaint, the powers of the FIFA president should be confined to guiding the organisation’s objectives, strategic direction, policies, and values without making unilateral decisions, which they claim Infantino has overstepped.
Speaking upon receiving the award, Trump stated, ‘The world is now a much safer place. This is one of the greatest honours of my life. We have saved millions of lives, as seen in situations in Congo. Conflicts between India and Pakistan were controlled before they escalated into war. Gianni has done an exceptional job. Additionally, record ticket sales have been achieved.’
FIFA and Infantino’s actions have also drawn reactions from football analysts and critics, many of whom expressed surprise at the decision. They emphasise that, as an international sports governing body, FIFA must remain politically neutral to avoid allegations of bias towards any political leader or country.
This event has sparked a new debate within the global football community. Critics are questioning the acceptability of a personal decision made while holding the position of FIFA president, and the potential long-term impact this may have on FIFA’s ethical standards and credibility.
As a result, Gianni Infantino now faces significant criticism for awarding a peace prize to Donald Trump, and the matter has ignited fresh discussion about ethics and neutrality within international sports organisations.
