In the December edition of the FIFA World Rankings, there is little cause for celebration for Bangladesh. The national men’s football team has retained its 180th position, identical to the previous month. While the ranking itself remains static, a closer look at the points reveals subtle yet significant movements beneath the surface.
The world governing body of football, FIFA, released the latest rankings on Monday. Following the conclusion of the Asian Cup qualifiers on 18 November, no further international windows took place, leaving the positions of most teams largely unchanged. The top of the table remains familiar: Spain leads, followed by Argentina, France, England, and Brazil.
Despite the unchanged ranking, Bangladesh’s rating points have experienced a slight decline. In November, the team had 911.19 points, which fell marginally to 911.10 in December. While this small reduction was insufficient to affect the official ranking, it underscores the fierce competitiveness in this tier of international football. Notably, Cambodia, occupying 179th place, is only marginally ahead with 911.54 points, demonstrating how minor point differences can potentially shuffle positions.
November Matches and Their Impact
Bangladesh’s November fixtures have also played a subtle role in the rankings discussion. Before the Asian Cup qualifiers, the team played a friendly against Nepal, which was initially omitted from November’s FIFA ranking update. After clarification, FIFA and the AFC confirmed that the match would be accounted for in December, resulting in the small adjustment in Bangladesh’s rating points.
Nepal’s performance tells a slightly different story. Despite drawing a two-goal match away against Bangladesh, their points increased from 902.44 in November to 902.52 in December. However, their position remains unchanged as Belize, in 181st place, maintains a higher score of 910.74.
| Country | FIFA Ranking | November Points | December Points |
| Cambodia | 179 | — | 911.54 |
| Bangladesh | 180 | 911.19 | 911.10 |
| Nepal | 181 | 902.44 | 902.52 |
| Belize | 182 | — | 910.74 |
Overall, the December FIFA Rankings send a message of stability for Bangladesh. Yet the subtle fluctuations in points serve as a reminder that a single match or result could dramatically alter the team’s standing. As international fixtures resume, it will be intriguing to see whether Bangladesh can break this period of stagnation and climb higher in the global football hierarchy.
