Fifty killed in a single night in terrorist attack in Nigeria

In a harrowing night of violence, armed assailants attacked multiple villages in Nigeria’s J Zamfara State, leaving at least 50 people dead. The brutal assault began on Thursday night and continued until Friday morning, with over 150 gunmen reportedly riding motorcycles from village to village, setting homes ablaze and terrorising residents.

The deadliest attack occurred in Tungan Dutse, located in the Bukkuum area, where local authorities confirmed at least 50 fatalities. Before fleeing, the attackers reportedly abducted several women and numerous children, according to officials and local residents.

Eyewitnesses described the chaos as the armed men torched houses and carried out indiscriminate killings. Hamisu A. Faru, the member of parliament for Bukkuum South, stated that the attackers were moving systematically between villages, causing widespread devastation. Speaking to journalists on Friday, he said the exact number of abductees remains uncertain as local authorities compile lists of missing persons.

Villagers have lamented that early warning signs were ignored. Abdullahi Sani, 41, told reporters that residents had seen more than 150 motorcycles carrying armed men a day before the attacks and alerted security forces. “No measures were taken,” he said. “Nobody slept last night; we are all grief-stricken.” Tragically, three members of Sani’s own family were killed in the violence.

Northern and western Nigeria have been grappling with frequent security threats, including armed criminal gangs and insurgent groups. Last week, a military operation in Borgu, Niger State, resulted in at least 46 deaths, with Konkoso village being the most severely affected, where 38 villagers were reportedly killed.

The escalating crisis has prompted growing international concern. In a bid to strengthen Nigeria’s security apparatus and target terrorist factions, authorities in Abuja have reportedly been in discussions with the United States. According to U.S. President Donald Trump, over 200 American troops may be deployed to assist in stabilisation efforts.

The recurrent violence has placed immense strain on local communities, with humanitarian agencies warning of a growing crisis of internally displaced people and urgent need for security reinforcement.

Residents and officials alike have called for stronger preventative measures to curb the rising tide of terror, while international observers continue to urge coordinated action to restore safety in Nigeria’s most vulnerable regions.
