Early Friday morning, a fire broke out at a five-star hotel located on the ground floor of a 14-storey building near the Khilgaon overbridge in Dhaka. Four hotel employees sustained burn injuries while attempting to carry out air-conditioning maintenance work when the blaze erupted.
The injured staff members have been identified as:
| Name | Age | Role | Condition |
|---|---|---|---|
| Md. Monsur | 32 | Technician | Burn injuries, stable |
| Md. Abdul Matin | 67 | Maintenance staff | Burn injuries, stable |
| Md. Mahi | 17 | Trainee | Burn injuries, stable |
| Md. Abdul Jalil | 67 | Senior staff | Burn injuries, stable |
According to colleagues at the scene, the fire ignited due to a short circuit in the air-conditioning unit while the team was performing routine repair work. The flames spread rapidly, causing panic among hotel staff and guests. Fortunately, no visitors were reported injured, and the fire was contained before causing major structural damage.
The injured employees were immediately rescued by their colleagues and transported to the National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute for emergency treatment. Hospital sources confirmed that all four are currently receiving medical attention and are in stable condition, though under close observation due to the severity of their burns.
Hotel management expressed regret over the incident, highlighting that regular safety inspections are conducted, and the fire appears to have been an unforeseen electrical fault. “We are reviewing all safety protocols and will ensure such incidents do not recur,” a hotel spokesperson stated.
Local fire authorities arrived promptly and extinguished the fire within a short period, preventing it from spreading to the upper floors of the building. An investigation into the precise cause of the short circuit and fire safety compliance at the hotel premises has been initiated.
Residents in the vicinity reported hearing alarms and seeing smoke billowing from the hotel’s ground floor, prompting immediate evacuation of nearby areas. Emergency response teams managed the situation efficiently, preventing casualties beyond the four injured staff members.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the critical importance of workplace safety measures and regular maintenance checks, particularly in high-rise buildings housing commercial establishments.
