A devastating fire broke out in a chemical warehouse adjacent to the Sahara Supermarket in Tongi, Gazipur Metropolitan City on Monday (22 September) afternoon, leaving at least five members of the Fire Service injured with burn wounds while attempting to bring the blaze under control.

Local residents reported that the Sahara Market and its surrounding areas have long been home to numerous chemical warehouses, many of which lack proper safety measures. Authorities and locals had previously expressed concern that such unsafe storage conditions could lead to a major disaster.

  • At approximately 3:30 PM, the fire reportedly began inside one of the warehouses.
  • Within moments, the flames spread rapidly to nearby facilities.
  • The Tongi Fire Service dispatched five units immediately to the scene.
  • During the firefighting operation, five personnel suffered severe burns due to the intensity of the blaze.

Mohammad Mamun, Deputy Director of the Gazipur Fire Service, stated: “Several additional units are working to contain the fire. Initial investigations suggest that the blaze originated from flammable substances stored inside the warehouse.”
