Firefighter Killed, Five Injured in Separate Crashes

In Sherpur, Bogura, a firefighter tragically lost his life on Saturday (14 February) while responding to a road accident, and five others sustained injuries in separate collisions across the district.

The deceased, Ahsan Habib, aged 46, was a member of the Sherpur Fire Service. The fatal incident occurred at around 2:00 am near the Fire Service Station in Mohipur. According to fire service sources, a traffic accident had been reported earlier in Chandaikona, prompting Habib to set out on a rescue operation.

Eyewitnesses reported that as the fire service vehicle prepared to leave the station, Habib was managing traffic to allow the vehicle to exit safely. At that moment, a stationary truck was struck from behind by a bus, causing the truck to roll onto Habib. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Sherpur Highway Police Camp in-charge Roich Uddin confirmed, “The bus and truck involved in the incident have been detained. After completing legal formalities, the body has been handed over to the family.”

In a separate series of incidents later that evening, five people were injured in two road accidents. At around 9:00 pm, a three-vehicle collision occurred in Gadidah, Sherpur, leaving four individuals injured. Among them, Najmul Haque Shuvo, aged 28, sustained serious injuries and is currently receiving intensive care at Shikder Medical College Hospital, Dhaka.

Another accident occurred in Hamchayapur, where a 39-year-old woman, Khadija Khatun, was seriously injured while crossing the road and was struck by a private car. She was immediately transported to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital for treatment.

Sherpur Highway Police Sub-Inspector Murtaza Nur stated, “The vehicles involved in these accidents have been seized. Our officers are working to ensure that traffic flow is restored and maintained safely.”

Summary of Recent Road Accidents in Sherpur:

Safety analysts emphasise that many accidents in the district are linked to excessive speed, poor traffic control, and inadequate pedestrian safety measures. Fire Service officials have paid tribute to Habib, describing him as a “brave and committed rescuer whose life was devoted to saving others.”

The local administration has been urged to enhance traffic management, particularly during night-time rescue operations, to prevent further tragedies.
