The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has imposed a strict prohibition on all forms of fireworks, firecrackers, sky lanterns, and gas balloons across the capital in observance of the holy night of Shab-e-Barat. The directive was announced on Tuesday through an official notice signed by DMP Commissioner Sheikh Md. Sajjat Ali.
According to the notice, Shab-e-Barat will be observed on the night of Tuesday, 3 February, a night regarded as sacred in the Islamic calendar. The police emphasised that the restrictions have been implemented to preserve the sanctity of the occasion, ensure peaceful celebrations, and maintain law and order throughout the city. The decision has been made under Section 28 of the DMP Ordinance, 1976, which grants the authority to regulate activities that may compromise public safety.
The ban will be effective from 6:00 pm on 3 February until 6:00 am on 4 February. During this period, the use, sale, transport, and purchase of fireworks and firecrackers will be strictly forbidden. Additionally, flying sky lanterns and gas balloons will also be prohibited. The DMP has issued a stern warning that any violation of these rules will lead to legal action, including arrests and penalties.
A DMP spokesperson said, “While Shab-e-Barat is a time for prayers and reflection, certain celebratory practices can pose serious risks, including fire hazards, injuries, and disruption of public order. The ban aims to ensure that residents can observe the night in safety and tranquillity.”
For public convenience, the key details of the ban are summarised in the table below:
| Activity | Ban Period | Remarks |
|---|---|---|
| Fireworks & Firecrackers | 6:00 pm, 3 Feb – 6:00 am, 4 Feb | Use, sale, purchase, and transport prohibited |
| Sky Lanterns (Fānūs) | 6:00 pm, 3 Feb – 6:00 am, 4 Feb | Launching in any area banned |
| Gas Balloons | 6:00 pm, 3 Feb – 6:00 am, 4 Feb | Flying or distribution prohibited |
| Explosive Materials | 6:00 pm, 3 Feb – 6:00 am, 4 Feb | Buying, selling, transporting, and using banned |
The DMP urged residents to prioritise safety and adhere strictly to the restrictions. Citizens are also encouraged to participate in the spiritual observances of Shab-e-Barat, including prayers and charitable acts, rather than engaging in hazardous celebrations.
By enforcing this temporary ban, the authorities aim to reduce fire-related accidents, maintain public safety, and ensure a peaceful atmosphere throughout Dhaka during one of the most spiritually significant nights of the Islamic calendar.
