Five Arrested Over Shooting of Jubo Dal Workers in Cox’s Bazar

Police in Cox’s Bazar have apprehended five individuals in connection with the attempted murder of two Jubo Dal activists, who were shot in the city last month. Following the attack, the suspects fled and went into hiding in Lama Upazila, Bandarban, disguising themselves as tourists to avoid capture.

The arrests were carried out late on Friday, 19 December, during a police operation at the Matamuhuri River View Resort in Mirjiri, Lama, Bandarban.

The detained individuals are:

Kamrul Hasan Babu (26)

Imran Uddin Khoka, alias Arian Khoka (25)

Abdul Kaiyum (33)

Md. Sakib (20)

A 17-year-old minor

Cox’s Bazar Sadar Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge, Shamim Uddin, reported that the incident occurred on 9 December at approximately 10:30 p.m. on Kalatali Bypass Road, Uttaran Residential Area near the Bus Terminal. Armed assailants on motorcycles targeted Saiful Islam (35) and Mohammad Faruk (34), both Jubo Dal members, opening fire and inflicting serious injuries.

Immediately after the shooting, the suspects fled Cox’s Bazar and sought refuge in Lama, Bandarban. Posing as tourists at a local resort, they remained in hiding until police, acting on confidential intelligence, launched a successful operation to apprehend them.

The OC confirmed that initial questioning of the suspects has already produced significant information linking them to the attack. Formal charges, including use of firearms and attempted murder, are currently being processed. Investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend any other individuals involved.

Both injured Jubo Dal activists are receiving treatment at Chittagong Medical College Hospital and are reported to be in stable condition. Authorities emphasised their commitment to bringing all responsible parties to justice.
