Students across Bangladesh are set to enjoy a continuous five-day holiday in February, marking the first extended break of the year for educational institutions. The Ministry of Education has announced that from 11 February to 15 February, all schools, colleges, and universities—both public and private—will remain closed.
This extended pause in academic activities is the result of a convergence of events, including the national parliamentary election, regular weekly holidays, and a significant religious festival. Analysts note that the February schedule has already seen multiple short breaks, disrupting routine classroom teaching, making this five-day hiatus the longest consecutive break in 2026 so far.
The extended holiday begins with the 13th National Parliamentary Election, scheduled for 11 and 12 February. To ensure smooth voting and maintain law and order during the election period, the government has declared these two days as public holidays, during which educational institutions will suspend classes.
Following the election, 13 and 14 February fall on Friday and Saturday respectively, the weekly holidays observed by the majority of schools across the country. The break concludes on 15 February, Sunday, which coincides with the Hindu festival of Shri Shri Shivaratri Vrat, officially declared a public holiday.
According to the Ministry of Education, this five-day break constitutes the fifth public holiday of 2026, and it is considered the first major academic recess of the year. Teachers, students, and guardians are expected to use this time for family gatherings, travel, and academic preparation.
In addition, the government has declared 10 February a general holiday for industrial workers, further extending the nationwide festive and leisure period surrounding the elections.
| Date | Day | Holiday Reason |
|---|---|---|
| 11 February | Tuesday | 13th National Parliamentary Election (Public Holiday) |
| 12 February | Wednesday | 13th National Parliamentary Election (Public Holiday) |
| 13 February | Friday | Weekly Holiday |
| 14 February | Saturday | Weekly Holiday |
| 15 February | Sunday | Shri Shri Shivaratri Vrat (Public Holiday) |
Education experts anticipate that following this prolonged break, schools and colleges will resume full academic activities with renewed vigour, helping students regain momentum for the months ahead.
