Jose Mourinho’s Fenerbahce staged a spectacular comeback against Dutch side Feyenoord on Tuesday, advancing 6-4 on aggregate to reach the Champions League qualifying playoffs.
The Turkish side had lost 2-1 in the Netherlands last week and found themselves a goal behind in Istanbul after Feyenoord defender Tsuyoshi Watanabe opened the scoring in the 41st minute, marking the first of his two goals of the night.
However, Mourinho’s men responded in style. Archie Brown and Jhon Duran struck just before half-time to restore parity, and the second half witnessed a remarkable surge with goals from Fred, Youssef En-Nesyri, and Talisca, sealing a thrilling 5-2 victory on the night.
Fenerbahce will now host Benfica in the first leg of the playoff round next week. Benfica advanced after defeating Nice 4-0 on aggregate, including a 2-0 win in Lisbon thanks to Norwegian duo Fredrik Aursnes (19) and Andreas Schjelderup (27). A place in the 36-team Champions League group stage is at stake.
Rangers Advance
Meanwhile, Rangers overcame Czech side Viktoria Plzen 4-2 over two legs to set up a clash with Club Brugge, who reached the Champions League last 16 last season.
Rangers had claimed a 3-0 victory at Ibrox last week but suffered a 2-1 defeat in the return leg on Tuesday. Lyall Cameron netted his first goal for the club, providing a consolation strike.
Rangers manager Russell Martin reflected on the match:
“We had some really good moments, but I’m disappointed by how many shots and chances we gave them. Another brilliant bit of learning, and we’re through to the last qualifying round for the Champions League, but I am annoyed. That wasn’t enough. There were too many scary moments.”
Club Brugge Comeback
Club Brugge also impressed, overturning a two-goal deficit to defeat RB Salzburg 3-2 at home, advancing 4-2 on aggregate.
